Chances are you have one in your purse or wallet at this very moment. Chances are that you have given or received at least one on this very day. Chances are that you will use one again very soon, and may not even think about it much. We are talking about business cards.
These little gems of advertising have been with us for so long that it is difficult to remember a time when we did not use them. It is quite possible that they were being used, in one fashion or another, since the concept of business began. Now, more than ever, these are invaluable tools for discourse, and should never be taken for granted again.
A card is a small thing, but is jam packed with information. So what should appear on every single one? Always, and this is vital, include your name. A calling card is a personal matter, even if it is representing a corporation or other entity. You are the one handing out the information, so make sure that you are the one who is being well represented. This is a contact point to be made with you, not just the company itself.
Contact information is a primary purpose of the giveaway. You should always include at least one phone number and an email address. Include a physical address if you rely on foot traffic or postal mail, but if you exist online this will not be necessary. You can always include the company address and phone numbers, but again, the thing is all about being able to reach you.
Include a short line or phrase, often a snappy motto or slogan is perfect, to let the reader know exactly what kind of business you are in. Many an attractive card becomes useless when the reader forgets exactly who gave them the card, and where. You can have the brightest and most unique card available, but if it cannot be discerned what it is that you do, it is almost worthless.
Speaking of uniqueness, do try and make it so. But do not use graphics that cannot be easily deciphered, or fonts that are ridiculously convoluted. Your presentation can be bright, wild, crazy, and fun but it must be clearly legible. If the printing is too far out no one can discern the necessary information in order to reach you.
Always stay current with the advertising you carry, and that includes the smallest among them. Keep a clean and stylish look to your wares, and do not be afraid to update regularly. These small items are inexpensive and a wise investment for that reason. You can afford to buy the very best when doing so, and should keep them looking new and enticing.
Business cards, far form being the staid representation of a company drone, are in actuality a calling card that has been personalized just for you. Make sure your personality shows, and take care to find the design that best represents you and your work. Use professional designers and printers if you can, and get the best quality you can. These cards are all about you, so you will want to always put your best face forward.
